Overview

Hospitals are healthcare institutions that provide inpatient and often outpatient services, serving as central nodes for diagnosis, treatment, emergency care, surgery, and increasingly for prevention, health promotion, and community programs. Their functioning shapes population health through infection prevention and control, antimicrobial stewardship, workforce capacity, quality and safety of care, and waste management, and they are key sites for epidemiological observation and intervention. Hospital performance depends on the knowledge and practices of healthcare workers, organizational structures, and the integration of services. Public Health International publishes peer-reviewed research relevant to hospitals and hospital-based care, including studies of healthcare-worker knowledge, attitudes, and practices toward infection prevention and control, antimicrobial stewardship among prescribers, integrated medical services using district hospitals, nurse turnover, biomedical waste management, burnout among maternal and neonatal staff, and clinical management of conditions such as COVID-19 and traumatic brain injury in hospital settings. This work examines how hospital practices, workforce factors, and organizational design affect prevention, treatment quality, and patient and staff outcomes, reflecting the field's emphasis on strengthening hospital systems—through infection control, stewardship, and quality improvement—to enhance their contribution to public health.
