Overview
Gender discrimination is the unequal or unfair treatment of individuals because of their sex or gender. It can take many forms, ranging from subtle bias in everyday interactions to overt exclusion, harassment, and violence, and it most often disadvantages women and girls, though it can affect people of any gender. Gender discrimination operates in education, employment, health care, political participation, and within families and communities, and it is reinforced by social norms, stereotypes, laws, and institutions. As a public-health concern, it contributes to disparities in well-being by limiting access to resources and opportunities, increasing exposure to stress and violence, and affecting mental and physical health. Reducing gender discrimination is widely recognized as essential to advancing equity, health, and human rights. Public Health International publishes peer-reviewed research relevant to gender, equity, and population health, including a study of adolescents' perceptions of gender discrimination in India and how those perceptions differ between boys and girls, as well as related work on gender equity, empowerment programs for adolescent girls, and the health of marginalized populations. This page gathers open-access research relevant to gender discrimination and its consequences for public health.
