Overview
Epidemiology is the study of how diseases and health conditions are distributed in populations and what factors influence their occurrence, spread, and control. Research published in Public Health International addresses diverse epidemiological questions across infectious diseases, chronic conditions, and environmental health concerns. The journal has featured investigations into thyroid disease patterns in hospital settings, seasonal influenza outbreak management in long-term care facilities, and temporal trends in sexually transmitted infections including syphilis and associated comorbidities. Studies have examined coinfections such as malaria and typhoid fever, parasitic diseases in livestock populations, and the prevalence of conditions ranging from narcolepsy in pediatric groups to cancer screening program development. Additional work has explored knowledge and practices surrounding HIV prevention interventions, the carcinogenic role of human papillomavirus, and potential biological effects of environmental exposures. This body of research reflects epidemiology's fundamental role in identifying disease burdens, understanding transmission dynamics, and informing public health interventions across varied geographic regions and healthcare contexts. By documenting disease patterns and risk factors, epidemiological studies provide the evidence base necessary for developing targeted prevention strategies, allocating health resources effectively, and improving population health outcomes.
