Overview

Environmental research and public health is the interconnected field that investigates how environmental and behavioral exposures affect population health and applies that knowledge to prevent disease and promote well-being. Public health is the organized effort to protect and improve health through surveillance, prevention, and policy, while environmental research identifies and characterizes the conditions and exposures that influence health outcomes. A prominent area concerns tobacco and related exposures, including roadmaps for tobacco control, the health risks of e-cigarette use such as oropharyngeal cancer, attitudes toward second-hand smoke, and smoking-cessation strategies, reflecting attention to a major modifiable determinant of disease. Infectious-disease prevention features through studies of childhood diarrhea and its associated factors and through measures such as face-mask adoption to limit respiratory transmission. The field also addresses social and behavioral determinants, including mental health disparities among marginalized youth, adolescent sexuality education, and the burden of unintentional childhood injuries and early management. Methodologically it combines epidemiology, exposure assessment, and program evaluation to link environmental and behavioral factors to measurable outcomes. Environmental research and public health thus integrate the study of harmful and protective exposures with population-level intervention, aiming to reduce preventable disease by understanding and modifying the environmental, behavioral, and social conditions that shape community health.
