Overview
Emerging infectious diseases are infections that have newly appeared in a population or have existed but are rapidly increasing in incidence or geographic range. Research published in Public Health International addresses multiple dimensions of this challenge, including policy responses, pathogen surveillance, and the intersection of environmental and social factors. Studies have examined reimbursement policies for infectious disease management in China, investigated potential pathogenic bacteria in domestic animal populations in Nigeria's Niger Delta, and analyzed features underlying disease emergence and re-emergence in the context of geopolitics and laboratory research practices. The journal has published work on diagnostic and monitoring approaches through immunoassays and immunogenomic methods applicable to infectious disease surveillance, as well as practical clinical guidance such as nutritional care protocols for Ebola patients in treatment settings. Additional research has explored seroprevalence of zoonotic infections like brucellosis in remote Colombian communities, examined how knowledge and sociodemographic factors influence COVID-19 risk exposure across African populations, and investigated vulnerabilities created by climate change and extreme hydrological events that may facilitate disease emergence. Community health assessments in urban African settings have also contributed to understanding local infectious disease burdens and preparedness needs.
