Overview

Community health research is the systematic investigation of the health of defined communities and populations, aimed at understanding their health needs and identifying interventions that improve outcomes at the group level. It applies epidemiological and social-science methods, from cluster-randomized trials and needs assessments to qualitative inquiry and surveys, to characterize the distribution of health problems and the factors that drive them within particular settings. Research in this field includes the design of recruitment strategies for studies in specific populations, such as HIV-prevention trials among underserved women, and the assessment of community health needs in urban settings. It addresses maternal and child health, including the utilization of antenatal care, the role of mobile communication in service uptake, and the implementation of care by community health workers, as well as the evaluation of quality-improvement strategies in healthcare facilities. Adolescent and reproductive health, gender, and the social determinants that shape behavior and access are recurring concerns. Sub-areas include community-based epidemiology and needs assessment, maternal, child, and reproductive health research, health-services and quality-of-care evaluation, and the study of social and behavioral determinants. By generating evidence rooted in the experience of communities, community health research informs locally relevant programs and supports efforts to reduce disparities and improve population health.
