Overview
Community health is the field of public health concerned with the physical, mental, and social well-being of defined populations and the social, economic, and environmental determinants that shape it. It integrates epidemiologic assessment, health-system delivery, and community participation to identify needs, allocate resources, and implement interventions tailored to local context, with particular attention to underserved and low-resource settings. Central methods include community health needs assessments, cluster-randomized trials, and qualitative evaluation of program implementation, often examining the role of community health workers in extending maternal and child health services, immunization, nutrition, and infection prevention. Recurring themes include the integration of traditional and national health systems, women's empowerment, and task-shifting to frontline cadres, alongside the management of acute childhood malnutrition and the application of quality-improvement frameworks such as the Donabedian model to evaluate facility-level care. Outbreak preparedness and response, including multisectoral and One Health approaches to emerging infections and pandemic mitigation, are also core concerns. The journal publishes peer-reviewed qualitative and quantitative studies, needs assessments, and implementation research drawn substantially from sub-Saharan African and other resource-constrained communities, addressing service delivery, prevention, and the determinants of population health.
