Overview

Children's health on an international scale is the field encompassing the services, research, education, and advocacy directed at protecting and improving the health and development of children across diverse countries and settings, with particular attention to equity and to the social and environmental determinants that shape outcomes from infancy through adolescence. It addresses preventive and promotive care spanning oral health, exemplified by school-based programs using fluoride and silver-ion compounds, and tobacco control efforts that protect children from initiation and secondhand exposure within broader population strategies. Adolescent health is a prominent focus, including sexual and reproductive health education and adolescent-parent communication, the perspectives of teachers and communities on delivering such education, and the broader determinants of adolescent well-being. Maternal and child health services intersect with this domain, as in the use of mobile communication to improve uptake of antenatal care that influences newborn outcomes. The field also considers how system-level disruptions, such as supply-chain interruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic, affect the availability of resources essential to child health, and how cross-cultural collaboration and cultural humility shape effective international intervention. Methodologically, it relies on epidemiology, health-services research, and community engagement to assess need and evaluate impact across borders. As a scholarly topic, children's health international integrates pediatrics, public health, and global-health practice to advance the survival, development, and well-being of children.
