Overview

Aging and health encompasses the biological, psychological, and social changes that occur as individuals grow older and the factors that influence well-being across the lifespan. Research published in this journal addresses multiple dimensions of this topic, including the cellular mechanisms underlying age-related decline, such as oxidative stress and telomere attrition, and potential interventions involving nutritional antioxidants and compounds like melatonin for muscle function. Studies examine psychological aspects of aging, including positive psychology approaches and the mental health impacts of social isolation, particularly during pandemic restrictions. Physical health concerns receive attention through investigations of vitamin D's role in fall prevention and balance, the relationship between fear of falling and frailty, and the management of chronic conditions such as osteoarthritis, including how health literacy affects self-management capabilities. Additional work explores novel therapeutic approaches, including photobiomodulation for depression and cognitive function, and immunomodulatory interventions in experimental aging models. This research matters because global populations are aging rapidly, creating urgent needs to understand how to maintain function, prevent disability, and promote successful aging while addressing the complex interplay of biological, behavioral, and healthcare system factors that determine quality of life in later years.
