Overview

Social anxiety disorder, also known as social phobia, is an anxiety disorder marked by intense, persistent fear of social or performance situations in which a person may be scrutinized or judged by others. Individuals with the disorder often experience strong anxiety, self-consciousness, and physical symptoms such as blushing, sweating, or trembling when interacting with others or being the center of attention, and they may avoid such situations altogether. This fear is out of proportion to any actual threat and can significantly impair relationships, education, and work, reducing overall quality of life. Social anxiety disorder commonly begins in adolescence and may co-occur with other conditions such as depression. Effective treatments include cognitive behavioral therapy, which helps people identify and change unhelpful thoughts and gradually face feared situations, and medication in some cases. Within the scope of this journal's focus on Psychological Disorders, social anxiety disorder illustrates how anxiety-related conditions are understood and treated. Related clinical work in the field, including a case study applying cognitive behavior therapy in a school setting to a young boy with extreme blushing and anxiety, reflects the use of structured psychological interventions for anxiety presentations. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to social anxiety disorder and its treatment.
