Overview

Molecular biomarkers are measurable biological molecules, such as DNA, RNA, proteins, or metabolites, that indicate a normal or abnormal process, a disease state, or a response to treatment. They can be detected in biological samples including blood, saliva, urine, and tissue, and they are used to screen for disease, support diagnosis, monitor progression, and assess how well a therapy is working. Because they reflect underlying molecular changes, biomarkers are central to personalized medicine, where they help match patients to the treatments most likely to benefit them and help identify individuals at elevated risk for particular conditions. The peer-reviewed open-access research collected here reflects this scope. It includes a review of molecular biomarkers that introduces their principles and uses, and a study developing cellular and molecular biomarkers for the anti-inflammatory activities of probiotic bacteria in fermented foods, which shows how biomarker approaches extend beyond clinical diagnosis into nutrition and functional-food research. Together these contributions illustrate how molecular biomarkers are defined, identified, and applied across health and biological sciences. This page sits within a journal focused on Proteomics and Genomics Research and gathers peer-reviewed, open-access studies relevant to molecular biomarkers.
