Overview

Integral membrane proteins are proteins that directly interact with the lipid membrane of the cell. These proteins are important components of the cellular membrane and perform a variety of roles that are essential for the proper functioning of a cell. They are found in all organisms and can be involved in cell signaling, transporting of molecules, recognition, and enzymatic activity. Integral membrane proteins also play an important role in controlling the movement of ions and water across the membrane, thus aiding in maintaining homeostasis. They are crucial for proper cell membrane organization and cell-to-cell communication.
