Overview

Bioinformatics analysis is the use of computational, mathematical and statistical techniques to organise, analyse and interpret biological data, spanning genetics, molecular biology, structural biology and pharmacology. It encompasses sequence alignment and annotation, variant interpretation, gene and protein expression analysis, prediction of structure and function, and the construction of biological and pathway networks that reveal how molecular components interact. Applied to high-throughput data from sequencing, microarray and mass spectrometry platforms, these methods extract patterns, prioritise candidate genes, proteins and biomarkers, and generate mechanistic hypotheses for experimental testing. Research in this area includes bioinformatic analysis of coronary-disease-associated SNPs and genes to identify proteins involved in atherosclerosis pathogenesis; the proteomics and bioinformatics status of the Human Proteome Project in disease diagnosis and treatment; microRNA regulation of gene expression through direct promoter targeting; molecular identification of bacterial isolates; optimisation and analysis of affinity-purification tandem mass spectrometry in mammalian cells; functional and structural interpretation of a BRCA1 variant of uncertain clinical significance; and network-pharmacology prediction of therapeutic targets. Additional studies address circular RNAs, digital-PCR quantification of microRNAs for colorectal cancer screening, and the role of bioinformatics in biotechnology. Across these contributions the field converts complex molecular datasets into structured knowledge about disease mechanisms, diagnostic markers and potential intervention points, bridging computational science and experimental biomedicine.
