Overview

Bioinformatics analysis is the application of computational and statistical methods to biological data, integrating algorithms, databases and modelling to interpret nucleic acid and protein sequences, gene and protein expression, structural information and the networks that connect them. It underpins genomics, transcriptomics and proteomics by enabling sequence alignment, variant annotation, functional prediction, pathway and network reconstruction, and the mining of high-throughput datasets such as those generated by mass spectrometry and microarray or sequencing platforms. Typical workflows associate genetic variants with phenotypes, predict protein function and interaction, and prioritise candidate biomarkers and drug targets. Research in this area includes bioinformatic analysis of coronary-disease-associated single nucleotide polymorphisms and genes to identify proteins implicated in atherosclerosis; assessment of the Human Proteome Project and the status of bioinformatics in disease diagnosis and treatment; the emerging role of bioinformatics in biotechnology; analysis of microRNA regulation of gene expression, including potential targeting of the OCT4 promoter; structural and functional interpretation of variants of uncertain significance in BRCA1; molecular confirmation of bacterial strain identification; and optimisation of affinity-purification mass spectrometry coupled with computational analysis. Further work spans circular RNAs and absolute digital PCR quantification of microRNAs for cancer screening. The discipline transforms complex, large-scale biological measurements into testable hypotheses about mechanism, diagnosis and therapy across genetics, molecular biology and pharmacology.
