Overview
Women's health is the branch of medicine and public health concerned with conditions and physiological processes specific to, or disproportionately affecting, women across the life course, including reproductive, hormonal, musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and psychosocial dimensions. It spans sex-specific biology, such as the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and the menopausal transition, alongside the social determinants that shape access to care, screening, and prevention. Core sub-areas include reproductive and maternal health, gynecologic and obstetric care, the perimenopausal and postmenopausal period with its vasomotor, skeletal, and cardiometabolic consequences, bone health and osteoporosis, and the management of chronic disease in female populations. Methodologically the field draws on epidemiology, cross-sectional and community-based surveys, qualitative inquiry into experience and health literacy, and clinical evaluation of interventions. Work in this area frequently examines menopausal symptoms and occupational functioning, osteoporosis knowledge and calcium intake, abortion access in low-resource settings, perinatal and intrauterine outcomes, and the influence of education and support on health behaviors, often in underserved or peri-urban communities. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research addressing preventive strategies, screening, and the determinants of well-being in women, integrating clinical, nutritional, and community-level perspectives to inform care and policy.
