Overview

Public health is the science and practice of protecting and improving the health of populations through organised societal effort, focusing on prevention, the determinants of health and the equitable distribution of health outcomes rather than the treatment of individual patients. Its core functions include surveillance and assessment of health status, the development of policy, and assurance that effective preventive and protective services are available. It addresses communicable and non-communicable disease, environmental and occupational hazards, behavioural risk factors such as tobacco and substance use, and the social, economic and commercial determinants that shape health across communities. Methods span epidemiology, biostatistics, health-services research, and the design and evaluation of community-level interventions. Research grounded here examines partnerships between public-health functions and social services, culturally informed management of overweight and obesity, the impact of climate change on public health, mental-health promotion through global data, data quality in health facilities, cardiovascular-disease knowledge and practices, disclosure of HIV diagnosis to children, e-cigarette use as a cancer-risk concern, vector-borne disease threats, and aflatoxin exposure through the food chain. Core concerns include prevention, health equity, population-level effectiveness, and the integration of policy, environment and behaviour. The journal publishes peer-reviewed studies across public health, including infectious and non-communicable disease, environmental and behavioural risk, and the interventions and systems that promote population health.
