Overview

Prevention and control denote the coordinated measures used to avert the occurrence of disease and to limit its spread and impact within populations. The framework spans primary prevention, which reduces incidence through immunization, healthy behaviours, and risk-factor reduction; secondary prevention, which detects and treats disease early through screening; and tertiary prevention, which limits complications and disability. Disease control adds the active containment of transmission through surveillance, infection-prevention-and-control practices, outbreak response, and the modelling of epidemic dynamics to guide intervention. These activities form the operational core of preventive medicine and public health, requiring evidence on determinants, the behaviour of healthcare workers and communities, and the effectiveness of control measures. Research relevant to this area includes infection prevention and control in healthcare facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic, knowledge, attitudes, and practices toward infection prevention and control among healthcare workers, prevention and control of parasitic infestation among schoolchildren, mathematical modelling and epidemic prediction of COVID-19, strengthening tuberculosis infection control and screening, and prevention and safety training to improve community health. Studies of hypertension control and waterborne-disease strategy further illustrate the breadth. Such work spans surveillance, infection control, and behavioural and modelling approaches. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on disease prevention and control, infection-prevention practice, outbreak modelling, and community health protection.
