Overview

Pediatrics is the branch of medicine devoted to the health and medical care of infants, children, and adolescents, addressing physical, developmental, and psychosocial growth from birth through adolescence. It integrates preventive care, including immunisation, growth and developmental surveillance, and nutrition, with the diagnosis and management of acute and chronic childhood conditions across infectious disease, endocrinology, neurology, oncology, and critical care. Because children differ physiologically from adults in pharmacology, disease presentation, and developmental vulnerability, paediatric practice emphasises age-specific assessment and early intervention to optimise long-term outcomes. The peer-reviewed research collected here reflects this breadth, including outcomes and associated factors after paediatric traumatic brain injury, paediatricians' knowledge of pertussis vaccination, models for high-volume urban immunisation clinics, and trends of diabetes in children seen in paediatric endocrinology and diabetes services. Further work on a rare febrile syndrome, bronchoalveolar findings in mycoplasma pneumonia, childhood COVID-19, internal jugular phlebectasia as a neck mass, and metastatic paediatric nasopharyngeal carcinoma illustrates the diagnostic range of the field, while studies on childhood overweight extend its preventive scope. Together these themes situate paediatrics at the intersection of preventive medicine, developmental science, and subspecialty care, where vaccination, early detection, and tailored treatment protect health across the formative years.
