Overview
Mental health, in the context of preventive medicine, refers to a person's emotional, psychological, and social well-being and to the strategies used to protect and promote it before disorders arise. It is shaped by genetic, biological, psychological, and social factors, and preventive approaches emphasise healthy lifestyles, supportive environments, early intervention, and the reduction of risk factors and stigma. This topic is significant because preventing mental ill-health and promoting psychological resilience can reduce the burden of conditions such as depression and anxiety, support coping, and improve quality of life across populations. Research published in this area includes community-based prevention and promotion, such as mentoring and coaching schemes for primary school-aged children and the collection of global opinion data to inform mental health promotion. Other studies examine the psychological well-being of specific groups, including survivors of colorectal cancer, breast cancer patients, veterans' partners attending psychoeducation support, and climate migrant women, as well as disparities affecting LGBTQ+ youth. The collection also addresses workforce well-being through studies of stigma, compassion fatigue, and coping among mental health service providers, the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic, the relationship between religion and mental health, and the health consequences of emotional repression. Together the articles reflect a preventive and promotive orientation toward mental health across diverse communities and settings.
