Overview

Community health interventions are organized strategies designed to improve the health of a defined population or community rather than treating individuals in isolation. They include education and health promotion, screening, vaccination campaigns, behaviour-change programmes, and the strengthening of local health services, and they aim to reduce the burden of disease, address risk factors, and improve overall wellbeing. By working at the level of groups, neighbourhoods, schools, or whole communities, these interventions seek to reach people in their everyday settings and to tackle the wider social and environmental factors that shape health. Community health interventions fall within the scope of Preventive Medicine And Care, which emphasizes prevention, health promotion, and the reduction of disease across populations. Research relevant to this area includes community-based mentoring and coaching schemes to support mental health in children, programmes to address overweight and obesity within a cultural context, and the implementation of maternal and child health care by community health workers. Such work illustrates how interventions delivered within communities support prevention, behaviour change, and access to care. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to community health interventions and preventive care.
