Overview
Cardiovascular diseases are a group of disorders of the heart and blood vessels, including coronary heart disease, hypertension, arrhythmias, heart failure, cerebrovascular disease, and peripheral vascular disease. Many share a common pathophysiology rooted in atherosclerosis and endothelial dysfunction, driven by modifiable risk factors such as elevated blood pressure, dyslipidaemia, diabetes, obesity, physical inactivity, and tobacco use, together with genetic susceptibility. As leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, they are a central concern of preventive medicine, which targets risk-factor identification and modification, screening, and lifestyle and pharmacological intervention to reduce events. Research relevant to this area includes regulatory mechanisms of candidate genes for human cardiovascular disease, knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding cardiovascular disease in community populations, hypertension in women and its relation to obstetric factors, the prevalence and risk factors of metabolic syndrome, the relationship between cardiovascular risk factors and depressive symptoms in vulnerable diabetic elders, the effects of smoking and vaping on the cardiovascular system, and cardiovascular risk among people living with HIV. In vitro models of cardiotoxicity further support safety assessment. Such studies span genetics, epidemiology, risk factors, and prevention. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on cardiovascular disease, its risk factors and mechanisms, and preventive and management strategies.
