Overview
Antiviral therapy is the use of agents and immunological strategies to prevent, suppress, or treat infections caused by viruses, acting either by directly interfering with steps in the viral life cycle or by modulating the host immune response to control infection. Direct-acting antivirals target processes such as viral entry, replication of the viral genome, protein processing, and assembly, while immunomodulatory approaches, including interferons and other immune mediators, enhance the host's capacity to recognise and clear the pathogen. Because viruses rely on host cellular machinery, selective antiviral action and the emergence of resistance are recurring challenges, making appropriate drug selection, timing, and combination important. Within Preventive Medicine And Care, antiviral measures complement vaccination, hygiene, and early diagnosis in limiting the spread and severity of viral disease, particularly in vulnerable patients such as those who are immunocompromised, transplant recipients, or affected by chronic conditions. Research relevant to this topic includes the use of immune modulators such as interferon-gamma against pandemic infection, the recognition and management of viral pneumonias, the role of radiological findings in viral disease, and the management of opportunistic infections such as cytomegalovirus oesophagitis. Such work supports the rational application of antiviral and immunomodulatory therapy to reduce the morbidity, mortality, and transmission of viral infections.
