Overview

Plant growth and development is the process by which plants increase in size and complexity and progress through their life cycle, from germination and seedling establishment through vegetative growth, flowering, and reproduction to senescence. It results from the coordinated activities of cell division, expansion, and differentiation, guided by internal signals such as plant hormones and by external cues including light, temperature, water, and nutrient availability. Plants continuously sense and respond to their environment, adjusting the growth of roots, shoots, leaves, and reproductive structures to optimize survival and resource acquisition. Key aspects include the regulation of root system architecture, which governs water and nutrient uptake and anchorage; the formation of new organs such as adventitious roots; and the responses that allow plants to cope with biotic and abiotic stresses. Understanding these processes is central to plant biology and has practical importance for agriculture, horticulture, and crop improvement. Within Plant Cell Development research, growth and development connect cellular and molecular mechanisms to whole-plant physiology. Research in this journal has addressed related topics including root system architecture under biotic and abiotic stress, the alleviation of nickel toxicity in maize seedlings, and the role of antioxidant enzymes in adventitious rooting. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to plant growth and development.
