Overview

Plants are multicellular, predominantly photosynthetic organisms that form the basis of terrestrial ecosystems and agriculture, converting light energy into chemical energy and producing the food, oxygen, and raw materials on which other life depends. Plant science investigates their cellular development, physiology, genetics, nutrition, and interactions with pathogens and the environment, knowledge that underpins crop improvement and sustainable production. The studies gathered here span this range. Molecular and developmental biology appears in work on the emerging roles of plant circular RNAs and on cell growth in plant stem-cell callus culture, while breeding is addressed through interventions for precision in plant genetics and breeding. Crop nutrition and management feature in studies of soil and foliar nutrient application affecting garlic disease, of nitrogen fertiliser and spacing on sugar-beet growth, and of disease detection using deep learning. Plant–pathogen interactions are represented by integrated management of a fungal pathogen causing white mould, and applied and environmental uses appear in work on wild-plant extracts against pathogens, on dietary plant lectins in relation to viral risk, and on tomato plants for the bioremoval of metals. Together these works express plant science as the study of how plants grow, are inherited, defend themselves, and can be improved and applied for agriculture, health, and environmental benefit.
