Overview

Patient care is the provision and coordination of services aimed at maintaining, restoring, or improving an individual's health, delivered by clinicians and health-care teams across primary, hospital, and community settings. It spans assessment, diagnosis, treatment, medication management, monitoring, and supportive and end-of-life care, and increasingly emphasises patient-centredness, safety, continuity, and the integration of services over time. Effective patient care depends on sound clinical processes, rational prescribing and dispensing, adherence support, the management of comorbidity, and quality-improvement systems that align care with the best available evidence. Research in this area examines quality-improvement strategies in private health facilities using a Donabedian framework, drivers and barriers to medication adherence in chronic disease, prescribing and dispensing practices assessed against WHO core indicators, and antimicrobial stewardship in hospital and community settings. Further work addresses the doctor–patient relationship and social connection during the COVID-19 pandemic, the role of artificial intelligence in enhancing efficiency, equity, and empathy in care, caregiving experience among cancer survivors, end-of-life care in long-term settings, and the standardisation of adverse drug event documentation. Studies draw on qualitative, survey-based, and indicator-driven designs across diverse settings. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on the delivery, safety, and improvement of patient care.
