Overview

Exercise and health concerns the relationship between physical activity and physical, metabolic, and psychological well-being, encompassing how regular movement influences disease risk, physiological function, and quality of life. Physical activity exerts wide-ranging effects: it improves cardiovascular and respiratory capacity, supports musculoskeletal strength, contributes to weight regulation and metabolic control, and modulates mood, stress, and resilience. These benefits are mediated by adaptations across multiple systems, including changes in cardiac output and vascular function, improvements in insulin sensitivity, and the release of exercise-responsive signalling molecules such as myokines, exemplified by studies of irisin responses to structured training. The field examines different modalities and intensities, from sustained moderate aerobic activity to brief high-intensity interval training, and evaluates their effects in both healthy populations and people living with chronic conditions, where exercise capacity and habitual activity levels can be reduced, as observed in haematological disorders and congenital heart disease. Exercise is also studied as a behavioural intervention for mental health and for occupational stress and burnout, and as a supportive measure in the context of infectious disease and rehabilitation. Realising these benefits depends on appropriate prescription, adherence, and individualisation according to age, fitness, and clinical status. Research in this area links physiological mechanisms, clinical outcomes, and public-health recommendations to clarify how activity promotes and preserves health.
