Overview

Clinical nursing is the field of professional nursing practice concerned with the direct, hands-on care of individuals, families, and communities to prevent illness, promote health, and support recovery from disease or injury. Clinical nurses assess patients' physical, psychological, and social needs, plan and deliver care, administer treatments and medications, monitor responses, and provide education that helps people manage their health and prevent complications. Practice is grounded in clinical knowledge, systematic assessment, and evidence-based methods, and it extends across settings including hospitals, primary care, and community and long-term care environments. Beyond bedside care, clinical nursing encompasses coordination within multidisciplinary teams, attention to patient safety, and contributions to the quality and effectiveness of healthcare delivery. Nurses play a central role in surveillance and management during outbreaks and in chronic and complex conditions, including the care of older adults and people living with cognitive impairment such as dementia. Contemporary practice also engages with quality-improvement frameworks, safe medication management and adverse-event reporting, and the adoption of new approaches and technologies in patient care. Workforce factors such as recruitment, retention, and turnover influence the capacity to sustain safe, continuous care. As a discipline, clinical nursing combines technical competence with attention to the human dimensions of illness, aiming to improve outcomes and the experience of those receiving care.
