Overview

Children's health is the field of medicine and public health concerned with the physical, mental, and developmental well-being of infants, children, and adolescents. It takes a whole-child and family-centred view, recognising that growth, nutrition, immunisation, disease prevention, and the social environment together shape lifelong health. Because childhood is a period of rapid development, early nutrition, caregiving practices, and access to services have lasting consequences, and family and community factors strongly influence outcomes. Research in this area examines the nutritional status and health of women and children, barriers to physical activity and healthy eating as perceived by low-income parents, and the recovery of children with moderate acute malnutrition. Studies also address childhood immunisation and the factors influencing male and parental involvement, the disclosure of HIV status to children and adolescents, and community-based mentoring schemes to support mental health in school-aged children. Further work considers the role of parents and siblings as models for managing digital screen use, micronutrient deficiencies such as vitamin A and their ocular consequences, and the burden of waterborne disease in young children. By integrating nutrition, infectious disease, mental health, and the family and social context, children's health research informs prevention and care that support healthy development from infancy through adolescence.
