Overview

Human parasites are organisms that live on or inside the human body and obtain their nourishment from the host, frequently causing disease in the process. They include protozoa (single-celled parasites), helminths (parasitic worms), and ectoparasitic arthropods such as mites, lice, and fleas. Human parasitic infections vary widely in severity, from mild and self-limiting to chronic and debilitating, and some parasites also act as vectors or reservoirs for additional infections. They remain a substantial cause of illness, particularly where access to clean water and sanitation is limited. Within Parasite Research, human parasites are examined through their transmission, prevalence, and public-health impact. Reported research relevant to this topic includes a study of domestic pigeons as a potential source for transmitting human protozoan parasites, a survey of intestinal parasitic infections among patients attending a clinic, and an assessment of the prevalence of schistosomiasis in a community. Together these illustrate work on the routes by which people acquire parasites and on the burden of infection in human populations. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to human parasites, their transmission, and their control.
