Overview

Chemotherapy of parasitic diseases is the treatment of infections caused by parasites using chemical or pharmacological agents that kill or inhibit the growth of the parasites. It encompasses the drugs and treatment strategies used against protozoan and helminth infections, including malaria, schistosomiasis, intestinal worm infections, and filarial diseases. The goals of parasite chemotherapy are to clear or reduce the parasite burden, relieve and prevent disease, and limit transmission. Because parasites can develop resistance and because many parasitic diseases affect resource-limited settings, the selection, combination, and stewardship of antiparasitic drugs are important considerations. Within Parasite Research, the chemotherapy of parasitic diseases connects to the journal's broader coverage of parasites, their prevalence, and their control. Understanding which parasites circulate in a population, and in which hosts, is a necessary foundation for designing and targeting treatment, so epidemiological surveys of protozoan and helminth infections complement the study of antiparasitic therapy. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to the treatment and control of parasitic diseases and the parasites they target.
