Overview

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a common, progressive lung condition characterized by persistent airflow limitation and breathing difficulty, typically caused by long-term exposure to cigarette smoke, air pollution and other noxious particles. It is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide, and because it is incurable but treatable, it raises ongoing questions about symptom control, comorbidity management and quality of life, including in palliative and supportive care. In the context of Palliative Care And Hospice, COPD is significant as a chronic, life-limiting illness whose advanced stages bring breathlessness, frequent exacerbations and substantial symptom burden. Research relevant to this area, reflected in this journal's corpus, addresses the broader management of the disease and its comorbidities, including studies of different COPD phenotypes, the presence of hypoxaemia and microalbuminuria, and the development of severity-classification systems from health-insurance data. Related work considers nutrition and the identification of patients who may benefit from oral nutritional supplements, the management of heart failure in primary care, and the profiles of patients dying in respiratory wards. Together these aspects span phenotyping, prognosis, comorbidity and supportive interventions, underscoring the importance of holistic, patient-centred care across the disease trajectory.
