Overview

The maxillary sinuses are a pair of air-filled cavities located within the maxilla, the upper jawbone, beneath the eyes and to either side of the nose. As the largest of the paranasal sinuses, they connect to the nasal cavity through openings called ostia and contribute to warming, humidifying, and filtering inspired air, lightening the skull, and influencing voice resonance, while their mucosal lining helps trap particles and clear secretions. Their anatomy is of particular importance in otolaryngology and in dental and maxillofacial practice, because their proximity to the upper teeth and the variability of their dimensions and drainage pathways affect both sinus disease and procedures in the posterior maxilla. Within this journal's coverage of otolaryngology, relevant work includes a cone-beam computed tomography study of the location and diameter of the primary maxillary sinus ostium, a cone-beam study of anatomical risk factors associated with immediate extraction placement in the posterior maxilla, and comparative imaging studies of the maxillary sinus in the context of sinus augmentation. Together these illustrate how detailed imaging and anatomical study of the maxillary sinuses inform diagnosis and procedural planning.
