Overview

ENT, an abbreviation for ear, nose, and throat, denotes the field of otolaryngology, the medical and surgical specialty devoted to disorders of the ear, nose, paranasal sinuses, throat, and related structures of the head and neck. It addresses conditions affecting hearing and balance, nasal and sinus function, and the upper airway and voice, encompassing both inflammatory and neoplastic disease. Representative concerns include disorders of the middle ear and tympanic membrane managed by procedures such as tympanoplasty using fascia or cartilage grafts, nasal and sinus pathology including nasal polyps and chronic sinusitis assessed with validated symptom instruments, and tumors of the larynx and other head and neck sites, where inflammatory markers and surgical management are studied. Congenital anomalies of the ear, cysts and lesions of the throat, and the overlap of dental and sinus infection further illustrate the breadth of the specialty. Otolaryngologists diagnose and treat these conditions through medical therapy and a range of surgical interventions, drawing on examination, imaging, and increasingly on cross-cultural adaptation of patient-reported outcome measures to assess disease burden and treatment effect. Because the ear, nose, and throat are anatomically and functionally interconnected and central to hearing, breathing, swallowing, and voice, otolaryngology integrates medical and surgical care of these structures, spanning infection, structural disease, oncology, and the restoration of sensory and airway function.
