Overview
Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease and the most common form of arthritis, caused by the gradual breakdown of the cartilage that cushions the ends of bones within a joint. As cartilage wears away, bones may rub against one another, leading to pain, stiffness, swelling, reduced mobility, and sometimes the formation of bony growths. It most often affects the knees, hips, hands, spine, and feet, and its likelihood increases with age, joint injury, obesity, and repetitive mechanical stress. Although there is no cure, osteoarthritis can be managed through exercise, weight management, physical therapy, pain-relieving medications, and, in advanced cases, joint replacement surgery, with the goals of relieving symptoms and preserving function and quality of life. Research relevant to this topic in OpenAccessPub journals includes studies on the link between osteoarthritis and falls, the relationship between osteoarthritis and frailty, the potential of vitamin D in hand osteoarthritis with sarcopenia, the impact of osteoarthritis on depression and social isolation, and the therapeutic effects of Tai-Chi exercise for painful knee osteoarthritis in older adults. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to the topic.
