Overview
Visual inspection in Ophthalmic Science is the examination of the eye using observation and specialized instruments to detect abnormalities, diagnose disorders, and guide treatment. Using tools such as the slit lamp, ophthalmoscope, and fundus camera, an eye specialist views the structures of the eye, from the external surface to the internal retina and optic nerve, looking for signs of disease such as cataract, glaucoma, and retinal changes. It is one of the foundational steps in a comprehensive eye assessment. Within Ophthalmic Science, visual inspection complements functional and imaging tests by allowing direct observation of the eye's anatomy. Careful examination can reveal subtle changes in the cornea, lens, retina, and surrounding tissues that signal developing conditions, often before symptoms become apparent to the patient. The findings inform whether further investigation or treatment is needed and provide a baseline for monitoring change over time. As a discipline, Ophthalmic Science relies on systematic inspection of the eye as a core method for identifying and managing the wide range of conditions that affect vision and ocular health. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to the examination and assessment of the eye.
