Overview

Surgical and ophthalmic practice is the medical and operative management of eye diseases and disorders, combining clinical assessment with both medical therapy and surgical intervention to preserve and restore vision. It encompasses the full range of ophthalmic conditions, including refractive errors, cataract, glaucoma, ocular surface disease, trauma, and infection, and integrates diagnosis with procedures performed on the anterior segment, posterior segment, orbit, and adnexa. Surgical innovation is a recurring theme, exemplified by femtosecond laser-assisted approaches in cataract surgery and their evaluation against conventional techniques, as well as procedures such as conjunctival resection for ocular surface disease refractory to medical therapy. The discipline also addresses ocular and orbital trauma, including injuries from foreign bodies and the visual consequences of facial fractures and their repair, and it examines the physiological effects of surgery itself, such as the impact of transiently raised intraocular pressure comparable to that experienced during ocular procedures. Scholarship in this area reports case experience, surgical technique, and outcomes through case reports and studies, including investigations that use models to understand ocular responses. The resulting evidence informs the indications for and execution of ophthalmic surgery, the management of complications and trauma, and the refinement of techniques intended to improve safety and visual outcomes in clinical eye care.
