Overview

Ocular tumors are abnormal growths arising in or around the eye, and they fall within the ophthalmic subspecialty concerned with their diagnosis and management. These lesions may be benign or malignant, may originate within ocular tissues as primary tumors or spread from elsewhere as metastases, and can involve the eyelids, conjunctiva, cornea, iris, ciliary body, choroid, retina, optic nerve, and orbit. Presentation depends on location: intraocular masses may disturb vision or be detected on examination, orbital lesions can displace the globe, and tumors affecting the visual pathway, such as chiasmal lesions, may produce characteristic ocular and visual-field manifestations. Some neoplasms with systemic origins, including hepatocellular carcinoma and post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder, can present with ocular signs such as retinal vascular occlusion, while nerve-sheath tumors may undergo malignant transformation. Diagnosis integrates clinical examination, imaging, and where appropriate histopathology, and management is tailored to tumor type, location, and whether sight or life is threatened, ranging from observation to medical, laser, radiation, or surgical treatment. Because ocular tumors can signal or accompany systemic disease, careful evaluation supports both vision preservation and the detection of underlying conditions. Research addresses tumor classification, ocular manifestations of malignancy, and approaches to diagnosis and treatment across the spectrum of eye and orbital neoplasia.
