Overview

Ophthalmology is the branch of medicine and surgery concerned with the anatomy, physiology, and diseases of the eye and visual system, spanning the diagnosis, medical management, and surgical treatment of disorders from refractive error to sight-threatening pathology. It integrates clinical examination, ophthalmic imaging, and microsurgery to address conditions of the cornea, lens, retina, optic nerve, and ocular adnexa, as well as the ocular manifestations of systemic and neurological disease. As a research discipline, Ophthalmic Science investigates the mechanisms of ocular disease, diagnostic techniques, and surgical and therapeutic approaches. The peer-reviewed work in this area reflects this breadth, including identification of eyes at risk for severe retinopathy of prematurity, ocular manifestations of chiasmal lesions, malignant transformation of a neurofibroma, central retinal vein occlusion associated with systemic malignancy, the influence of astigmatism on the visual cortex, validation of vision-screening instruments, internuclear ophthalmoplegia from cerebrovascular infarction, surgical correction of corneal astigmatism, and high-resolution optical coherence tomography in the evaluation of choroiditis. Studies of anti-VEGF therapy in retinal vein occlusion and of orbital injury situate ophthalmology within medical and surgical retina and trauma. Methods span clinical case series, imaging, surgical evaluation, and diagnostic validation. This body of research treats ophthalmology as a comprehensive medical-surgical specialty addressing the full range of ocular and visual disorders.
