Overview

Ophthalmic surgery practice is the clinical discipline encompassing the diagnosis, surgical management, and perioperative care of disorders affecting the eye and its surrounding structures. It integrates preoperative assessment, the performance of surgical and laser procedures, and postoperative follow-up across a range of conditions, including cataract, glaucoma, corneal and refractive disorders, retinal disease, and ocular and orbital trauma. Common interventions span cataract extraction with intraocular lens implantation, including femtosecond-laser-assisted techniques and specialised lens solutions for eyes with deficient capsular support, as well as the surgical repair of injuries such as orbitocranial and zygomatic trauma with associated visual compromise. Practice in this field requires accurate diagnosis, sound surgical judgement and technique, and vigilant management of complications, including postoperative inflammation and rarer adverse outcomes such as drug-induced macular oedema. Decision-making weighs the benefits of intervention against surgical risk, the patient's overall ocular and systemic condition, and the goal of preserving or restoring vision and quality of life, particularly for those with visual impairment. Effective ophthalmic surgery practice also depends on appropriate use of imaging and diagnostic tools, careful case selection, and structured follow-up to monitor outcomes. By combining clinical assessment, refined operative skill, and attentive perioperative care, the practice of ophthalmic surgery aims to deliver safe, effective treatment that maintains and improves visual function.
