Overview

Ophthalmic imaging is the branch of Ophthalmic Science concerned with capturing detailed images of the eye and its surrounding structures to support the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of ocular conditions. It employs a range of techniques and instruments, including optical coherence tomography, fundus photography, slit-lamp imaging, fluorescein and other forms of angiography, and ultrasound, to visualize the cornea, lens, retina, optic nerve, and orbit. These methods allow clinicians to detect structural changes, measure tissue layers, document disease progression, and guide treatment decisions with a level of detail not achievable by direct examination alone. As a field, ophthalmic imaging continues to advance through improvements in resolution, automation, and the integration of imaging data with clinical assessment, making it central to modern eye care and ophthalmic research. Within the broader scope of Ophthalmic Science, imaging underpins work across retinal disease, glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmology, and ocular trauma. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to the eye and visual system, offering clinicians, researchers, and students freely accessible scientific work that informs the diagnosis and study of ocular disease.
