Overview

The ocular system comprises the anatomical structures and physiological processes involved in vision, including the eye, its supporting tissues, and the neural pathways that transmit visual information to the brain. Research published in Ophthalmic Science on this topic addresses diverse aspects of ocular health and function across populations and clinical contexts. Studies have examined measurement techniques for refractive errors and vision screening, including photorefraction devices and standardized vision screeners, with attention to factors such as race, age, and pupil size that may influence diagnostic accuracy. Investigations into structural changes have explored macular ganglion cell layer thickness in patients receiving systemic medications and the effects of transiently elevated intraocular pressure on retinal function and ganglion cell survival in animal models. Clinical research has documented ocular manifestations of nutritional deficiencies, particularly vitamin A deficiency in pediatric populations, and neurological conditions affecting the visual pathway, including chiasmal lesions. Additional work has evaluated immunomodulatory treatment timing in inflammatory eye diseases, examined barriers to accessing ophthalmic care in underserved communities, and explored emerging technologies in both surgical intervention and telemedicine applications for eye examination, collectively advancing understanding of ocular system health and disease.
