Overview
Medical retina is the subspecialty of ophthalmology concerned with the diagnosis and non-surgical management of disorders affecting the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye, and the underlying choroid and vitreous. The retina converts incoming light into neural signals sent to the brain, so disease here can cause visual impairment or blindness. Medical retina encompasses conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusions, age-related macular degeneration, inflammatory chorioretinal disease, and retinopathy of prematurity, and relies heavily on imaging such as optical coherence tomography to assess and monitor disease. Research published in this journal addresses several of these areas, including the identification of eyes at risk for severe retinopathy of prematurity, a case series of resolving vitreous haemorrhage in the setting of diabetic retinopathy, the use of high-resolution optical coherence tomography in evaluating and managing multifocal serpiginoid choroiditis, and a report of central retinal vein occlusion. These studies reflect the journal's engagement with the retinal and choroidal disorders that define the subspecialty, as well as the imaging tools used to characterize them. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to medical retina and the management of retinal disease.
