Overview

Eye cataract surgery is a procedure in which the eye's clouded natural lens, a cataract, is removed and usually replaced with an artificial intraocular lens to restore clear vision. A cataract develops when the normally transparent crystalline lens becomes opaque, scattering light and progressively blurring sight. While early changes may be managed with corrective lenses, advanced cataracts that interfere with daily life are treated surgically, most commonly by phacoemulsification, in which the lens is broken up and aspirated before an implant is positioned. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access ophthalmology research that touches on cataract surgery and related lens and surgical topics. Reported work includes the use of femtosecond laser technology in cataract surgery and its trade-offs, the management of absent capsular support with a new intraocular lens design, and the prevention of cataract formation by inhibiting inflammation-driven dysregulation of lens calcium. Additional studies examine surgical incision techniques for correcting pre-existing corneal astigmatism, broadening the surrounding context of lens and anterior-segment surgery. Collectively these articles assemble evidence relevant to the techniques, devices, and biology associated with the surgical treatment of cataracts.
