Overview

Diseases of the orbit and cranial nerves are conditions affecting the bony eye socket and its contents and the nerves that control eye movement, sensation, and vision. The orbit houses the eyeball, extraocular muscles, blood vessels, fat, and the optic nerve, while several cranial nerves govern visual signaling, pupil response, and the coordinated movement of the eyes. Disorders in this region include trauma and foreign-body injuries, tumors and other mass lesions, inflammation, infection, and vascular events, any of which can disturb vision, eye alignment, or eye movement. Within the scope of Ophthalmic Science, research in this area has examined orbitocranial injury involving an unusual foreign object, chiasmal lesions presenting with ocular manifestations, cerebrovascular infarction presenting as bilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia, and delayed vision loss following repair of an assault-induced zygomatic fracture in a patient with anterior clinoid process pneumatization. These reports illustrate how orbital and neural pathology can present through the eye and visual system. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to diseases of the orbit and cranial nerves, offering clinicians, researchers, and students freely accessible scientific work in neuro-ophthalmology and orbital disease.
