Overview

Diagnosis and treatment of visual problems is the area of Ophthalmic Science concerned with detecting, characterising, and managing disorders that impair vision, from refractive error to retinal, choroidal, optic-nerve, and inflammatory disease. Diagnosis combines visual acuity and refraction testing, intraocular pressure measurement, and increasingly high-resolution imaging such as optical coherence tomography and enhanced-depth imaging, while treatment spans optical correction, pharmacological and anti-angiogenic therapy, immunomodulation, and surgery. The research collected here reflects this scope through studies of immunomodulatory therapy in Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease, choroidal imaging biomarkers in exudative macular degeneration, drug-induced cystoid macular edema, retinal vein occlusion and its management with anti-VEGF and steroid therapy, identification of eyes at risk for severe retinopathy of prematurity, and surgical outcomes in giant retinal tear detachment assessed with macular optical coherence tomography. Further work addresses chiasmal lesions, optic nerve head drusen, the impact of visual impairment on quality of life, and barriers to ophthalmic services. Together they span detection, imaging, medical and surgical management, and access across diverse eye conditions and populations. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research in Ophthalmic Science on the diagnosis and treatment of disorders affecting vision.
