Overview
Common ophthalmic disorders are the most frequently encountered diseases and conditions affecting the eyes and vision. They include refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism, in which the eye does not focus light correctly; cataract, the clouding of the eye's natural lens; glaucoma, in which optic nerve damage often linked to raised eye pressure can cause vision loss; and age-related macular degeneration, which affects central vision. Other common problems include dry eye, conjunctivitis and other ocular infections, diabetic retinopathy, and various corneal and retinal conditions. Many of these disorders can be diagnosed through routine eye examination and managed with spectacles, medication, laser therapy, or surgery, and several leading causes of visual impairment are preventable or treatable when detected early, which makes access to eye care an important public health concern. Ophthalmic Science, the OpenAccessPub journal hosting this page, publishes peer-reviewed, open-access research on the eye, vision, and ocular disease. Related OpenAccessPub work has examined accessibility and barriers to ophthalmic services in rural communities and the influence of visual impairment on quality of life, reflecting attention to the burden and care of eye disorders. This page gathers open-access scholarship relevant to common ophthalmic disorders.
