Overview
Age-related vision loss refers to the progressive decline in visual function that accompanies ageing, driven by conditions such as age-related macular degeneration, cataract, glaucoma, and diabetic and vascular retinopathies, as well as changes in refraction and accommodation. Macular degeneration in its exudative form involves choroidal neovascularisation and fluid leakage that damage central vision, while other processes affect the lens, optic nerve, and retinal ganglion cells. Detection relies on visual acuity and screening tests, intraocular pressure measurement, and retinal and choroidal imaging, with management ranging from anti-angiogenic therapy to surgery. The research collected here reflects ophthalmic themes relevant to ageing vision, including persistent neovascular exudation and choroidal imaging biomarkers in exudative macular degeneration, the impact of visual impairment on quality of life, validation of vision-screening tools, visual loss associated with optic nerve head drusen, the effects of raised intraocular pressure on retinal ganglion cells, and barriers to accessing ophthalmic services. Together they span retinal and choroidal disease, screening, optic-nerve pathology, and service access across clinical and population settings. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research in Ophthalmic Science, including the diagnosis, mechanisms, and management of vision-threatening conditions associated with ageing.
