Overview

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a progressive eye disease that damages the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed central vision. It typically affects older adults and is a major cause of vision loss in this group. AMD occurs in two main forms: a dry (non-neovascular) form, marked by the gradual accumulation of deposits and thinning of retinal tissue, and a wet (neovascular) form, in which abnormal blood vessels grow beneath the retina and leak fluid or blood, causing more rapid loss of central vision. Within the scope of Ophthalmic Science, research in this area has examined the wet form of the disease, including persistent neovascular exudation in patients with exudative AMD who show choroidal imaging biomarkers reflecting simultaneous choroidal hyperpermeability and angiogenesis. Other work has investigated antioxidant phytochemicals as potential treatments for age-related macular degeneration, reflecting interest in approaches that may slow disease progression. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to age-related macular degeneration, providing clinicians, researchers, and students with freely accessible scientific work on retinal disease and the preservation of vision.
