For the edentulous patient, dental implant therapy is the accepted treatment to replace one or more missing teeth as implant survival rates are greater than 90%. Unfortunately, surgical removal of dental implants occurs for a variety of reasons. As human studies are limited, this case report provides an opportunity to evaluate the peri-implant characteristics in a dental implant removed from a patient using histology. In our patient, the implant was removed three years after completion of the prosthetic phase due to fracture of the abutment that could not be removed from the implant. Histological examination of the implant revealed mature lamellar bone in direct contact with the implant surface. Histomorphometric evaluation revealed a bone-to-implant contact (BIC) of 73.6%.

The aim of this article is to present alternative possibilities for corrective intervention using corticobasal implants, following the failure of treatment with two stage implant in cases of extensive edentulism, multi-segmented edentulism, and the development of peri-implantitis 1 at the level of these implants. For this purpose, a case was selected involving a patient treated with two stage implants in a multi-segmented manner, in the distal regions of the maxilla and mandible, where the implants were affected after 12 years by peri-implantitis in proportions ranging from 20% to 100% in different areas of bone, with a predominance in the vestibular area. The decision was made to remove the affected two stage implants, as well as the remaining deciduous teeth, with or without periodontal conditions, but whose position on the arch made improperly rehabilitation, both functionally and aesthetically impossible, and made the second rehabilitation with polished corticobasal and compressive implants in immediate loading 2. Function and aesthetics of the gnathological apparatus were restored through definitive fixed metal-ceramic prosthetics on the support of corticobasal and compressive implants within 4 days from the beginning of the treatment, with the result being monitored over a period of 3 years and 3 months, and this evaluation is to continue over time. From a surgical perspective, for secondary rehabilitation with polished corticobasal and compressive implants, strategic positions in the maxillary and mandibular bones were used as follows: the fusion area of the maxillary bone with the sphenoid bone, the nasal cortex, the sinus cortex the lingual cortex distal to the mylohyoid line, and the interforaminal mandible area.34 These areas correspond to methods described in Consensus Number 6 in the IF The Foundation of Knowledge 5. In conclusion, the treatment with corticobasal, compressive polished implants is successful even in the case of a difficult clinical scenario like the one described for this patient 6. The reduced treatment time, along with the absence of the need for sinus lifts or bone grafts, makes it the ideal solution in any situation. The use of corticobasal implants, with fixation in the second/third cortical layer and an immediate loading protocol, should represent the primary solution in treating cases with poor bone representation, and no only as a “Corrective Intervention with Corticobasal® Implants”7.

Contact intensity is a significant factor in immoveable implant restorations. This study visually compares the use of four occlusal contact indicators one of which measures contact intensity and surface area in a single subject. The need for an occlusal contact indicator that can be used with fixed implant restorations is examined. Three contact indicators used in practice are visually compared to a novel system where pressure sensitive information and surface area can be evaluated numerically and stored. Findings suggest that intensity and surface area should be measured upon implant placement. Limitations of this observational study are discussed. Directions for future research and more systematic study are offered

Implant-supported overdentures provide a good opportunity for dentists to improve the quality of life and oral health. Atrophic mandible poses a significant challenge to successful oral rehabilitation with dental implants. The aim of this case report is to demonstrate the concept of immediate functional loading in the mandible using unsplinted implants to support a locator attachment supported overdenture.

Breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) is a recently recognized type of T-cell lymphoma that can develop following breast implants, with morphologic and immunophenotypic features indistinguishable from those of ALK-negative ALCL. Here we report a case of a 58-year-old woman with a history of subglandular silicone implants placed for bilateral breast augmentation 25 years ago, who presented with bilateral breast pain and was found to have bilateral Baker Grade III capsular contracture, and heterogenous fluid collection centered near the left third costochondral articulation, a suspicious left chest wall lesion, and left axillary lymphadenopathy on imaging. A left axillary lymph node core biopsy and an aspiration of the fluid were performed, and no malignant cells were identified. The patient underwent bilateral removal of breast implants and total capsulectomies. Microscopic examination of the capsule surrounding the left breast implant revealed large pleomorphic tumor cells in a fibrinous exudate. By immunohistochemistry, the tumor cells were found to be positive for CD3 (subset), CD4, CD7, CD30 (strong and uniform), and CD43, and negative for CD2, CD5, CD8, and ALK1, supporting the diagnosis of breast implant-associated ALCL. No lymphoma cells were identified in the right breast capsule, confirmed by CD30 stain. Breast implant-associated ALCL is a very rare disease that can develop many years after breast implant placement. Proper evaluation with breast imaging and pathologic workup is essential to confirm the diagnosis in suspected cases. Our case highlights that adequate sampling is important in the investigation of patients with suspected breast implant-associated ALCL.

Open bite malocclusion, due to it’s multifactorial etiology, has always been considered a difficult problem to treat. Often associated with transverse maxillary deficiency, this is a real challenge in the field of orthodontics. The traditional approach, for this type of anomaly, in adult patients, is orthognathic surgery and RME (rapid maxillary expansion). There are several approaches to the treatment of adult patients using digital technology. Mini-implant supported palatal expander limits the side effects of the conventional RME and is less invasive compared to orthognathic surgery. Precise and predictable mini-implant insertion, using a customized surgical guide, provides a safe therapeutic approach. This case report combines Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), laser scan superimposition, computer-aided design (CAD) and 3D printing in order to design and print a customized surgical guide for orthodontic mini-implant insertion. A CBCT scan was performed to determine the optimal site for mini-implants’ placement. Using the 3Shape Trios Intraoral Scanner the maxilla and the mandible were laser-scanned. Blue Sky Plan 4 software was used to design the surgical guide, and RayWare software was used for printing it. 4 mini-implants were inserted using a safe and predictable technique. The 3D technology represents the future of orthodontics, reducing the risks, chair-side time while providing the best treatment plan for the patient.

The main purpose of the impression is to record and transfer the relationship between implants and to reproduce this relationship as accurately as possible. But, Unplanned placement of the implants may result in close approximation of the implants, thereby posing tough challenge to the restorative dentist, to first accurately record the impression and later on fabricate the prosthesis with satisfactory esthetics and function. This article presents a modified direct impression coping procedure for precise making of impression of closely placed implants which otherwise may be difficult to replicate the exact position of the implants by conventional direct or indirect technique.

Dental implant restoration is challenging procedure when it involve the esthetics zone, and since implant dentistry is prosthodontically driven procedure, care were practice in restoration of missing teeth in esthetics area which will fulfill the objective. Extraction of teeth leave buccal plate bone unsupported and decrease the blood supply and since this plate is very thin resorption will be expected. Different attempt was done in order to prevent this sequence and create natural emergence profile around dental implant prosthesis. Socket preservation procedures were introduced, however in case of ridge deficiencies, hard and soft tissue augmentation procedures are indicated. Socket shield technique meets the demands of minimal invasion, tissue preservation, and no need of bone substitute materials. And can be applied not only for maintaining buccal contour of an edentulous ridge but also for keeping the inter-implant soft and hard tissue In this review paper we present different articles and case report using socket shield technique as treatment protocols and try to explore different protocol are practice in order to achieve high treatment out come with optimal success.

Mini screws represent a new treatment modality in orthodontic biomechanics. They provide absolute anchorage, no secondary movements and reduced orthodontic treatment time. Futhermore, the surgical procedure for mini implants placement is quite simple and this type of treatment requires no patient compliance. We selected a clinical case in order to emphasize one of the most important indications of the mini implants: retrusion of the upper incisors for a incresed overjet case in a young patient. Two mini implants were placed in order to obtain the correction of the overjet and the retrusion of the anterior teeth. The retrusion was obtained in a reduced period of time using retraction devices on crimpable hooks.

MicroRNAs are short sequences of non-coding RNAs crucial in regulation of cell development, proliferation and differentiation. Some of them showed to be related with the expression of osteogenic genes. Aim of the present review was to evaluate the biological effects of titanium implant surfaces activated with miRNAs or antimiRNAs. A bibliographical electronic research was carried out on PubMed/Medline. Articles investigating the influences of miRNA functionalized surfaces on human or animal cells were included. Reports were excluded if investigating surfaces modified with molecules different from miRNAs, if miRNAs were not loaded to titanium surfaces. Five articles met the inclusion criteria. Surfaces functionalized with miRNAs showed to up-regulate the expression of osteogenic genes like RUNX2, OPN, OCN, BMP, OSX, ALP, COL1 and COL3. Investigated surfaces additionally showed more bone-like mineralized tissues, bone lacunae, osteocytes and new blood vessels. MiRNAs loaded to titanium implant surfaces stimulate the expression of genes related to osteoblasts differentiation, osteogenesis, osseointegration and reparation of mineralized tissues. Vectors used to link titanium surfaces and miRNAs did not show cytotoxicity or interference with cells’ viability.

Purpose of Study: To study reparative osteogenesis and tissue integration characteristics for implanting three-dimensional mesh structures of titanium nickelide into a bone cavitary defect. Material and Methods: The authors modeled cavitary defects of femoral metaphysis experimentally in Wistar rats divided into an experimental group and control one. The study duration was 60 days in total. The methods of radiography, those of light and electron microscopy, X-ray electron probe microanalysis used. Results: Under implantation the defect was filled with cancellous bone the volumetric density of which more than 1,5-fold exceeded control values (р < 0.001). The implant had biocompatibility, osteoconductive and osteoinductive properties, it stopped inflammatory processes. The membrane protective barrier which prevented connective tissue sprouting was formed on the implant surface in the defect periosteal zone. The osteointegrative junction was formed being persisted up to the end of the experiment. Reparative osteogenesis was performed by direct intramembranous and apposition type. Conclusion: The implant of three-dimensional mesh titanium-nickelide structures has marked osteoplastic properties, and it can be successfully used in orthopedic surgery.

This case report describes the treatment of a dento-alveolar protrusion with anterior open bite. The 21-year old patient had a convex profile , class I dental malocclusion , anterior open bite of 4 mm and presented tongue thrust. The treatment plan was to insert two mini-implants for premolar intrusion along with the straight –wire fixed appliances. Tongue therapy was performed by myofunctional exercises. Using the absolute anchorage we were able to achieve our goals in a predictable manner without the use of orthognathic surgery or patient compliance . After the tongue thrust habit was removed we are confident that this is a stable result .

This narrative literature review investigates the clinical feasibility of maxillary sinus lift using the lateral window (or traumatic) technique, employing a grafting material composed of hydroxyapatite associated with beta-tricalcium phosphate. The study is based on the premise that bone resorption and sinus pneumatization—common in edentulous posterior maxillae—pose a challenge to achieving primary stability during dental implant placement. Given the limitation imposed by reduced residual bone height, bone-grafting surgical techniques become necessary to enable implant-supported rehabilitation. The objective of this work is to analyze, through a literature review, the efficacy of combining synthetic biomaterials as an alternative to autogenous bone grafts, which are considered the gold standard in implant dentistry. A bibliographic search was conducted in the PubMed and LILACS databases and through the VHL portal, prioritizing articles addressing the biological properties of alloplastic grafts, the indications of the lateral window technique, and the clinical success rates of implants placed in previously grafted areas using such materials. The findings demonstrated that hydroxyapatite associated with beta-tricalcium phosphate exhibits favorable osteoconductive characteristics, such as adequate porosity and gradual resorption, while allowing the formation of viable bone within a clinically acceptable timeframe. The combination of these materials eliminates the need for a second surgical site, reduces morbidity, and maintains treatment predictability. It is concluded that the lateral window technique associated with synthetic biomaterials is a safe and effective alternative for patients with maxillary bone atrophy, capable of promoting suitable bone beds for dental implant placement and stabilization, with lower surgical risk and satisfactory clinical outcomes.

A potential treatment for Alzheimer's disease is vagus nerve therapy, which has been made possible by considerable advances in neuroscience. An essential component of the autonomic nervous system, the vagus nerve regulates memory, inflammation, and cognition. Researchers hope to delay the progression of Alzheimer's disease and improve cognitive function by implanting a vagus nerve stimulator (VNS). Alzheimer's patients have higher heart rate variability, according to an ECG study, which may be advantageous. To completely grasp its mechanics and long-term effectiveness, more research is necessary.

Auto transplantation is a fast and economical option when a suitable donor tooth is available for replacement of a tooth considered impossible to treat. The purpose of this case report is to describe methods used for autotransplantation and its advantages for cases with a missing bilateral mandibular firstmolar, as compared with a dental implant, removable partial denture, and other methods of prosthesis. In the present patient who underwent auto transplantation, clinical and radiographic outcomes were considered satisfactory at one and two years postoperatively. Bone healing was observed around the roots of transplanted teeth, which showed good function. In autotransplantation cases, even when the donor tooth has complete root formation, a high success rate can be achieved when the patient is properly selected and treated. Although the chance of root resorption remains because of necrotic pulp and periodontal irritation during manipulation, auto transplantation should be considered as a good treatment modality in feasible cases. Based on the present findings, even though autotransplantation is not common in general dental practice, we consider that it offers a clinically and economically viable alternative as compared to other more complicated prosthetic and dental implant treatments. The purpose of this report is to show that auto transplantation is a superior treatment method for single molar defects as compared to other prosthetic methods, as the periodontal ligament of the patient can be used and cutting adjacent teeth is avoided. In addition, it is a treatment method that can effectively utilize a wisdom tooth.

Bone Scaffold is a three-dimensional porous construction which provides support to promote natural cell growth in damaged or broken section of bone. In recent years researchers from various departments like biomedical, mechanical, orthopedics, have shown significant interest in adopting ‘Bone Scaffolds’ as a promising treatment for bone defects. ‘Bone Scaffold’ is a honeycomb-like architecture composes of bio-compatible material having grater advantages over current grafting solution. In this paper, the authors try to review the available e-articles in an organized way on the bone scaffold in the field of biomedical implants with 3D printing. The selected literature mainly focuses on the biocompatible material and various advanced manufacturing methods used for manufacturing / preparing of bone scaffolds. This article tries to padding the gap between theoretical and actual implementation of ‘Bone Scaffolds’ by properly analyzing selected research and allowing future opportunities for reinventing the new possibilities in the field of biomedical.

Bangladesh many older people spend their life in not only the unwell health but also in poverty which is major risk for the elderly population. This is especially true for older women, who suffer from various difficulties ensuing from prejudices to gender, widowhood and old age. Climate migrants start living in urban slums are in search of better and secure life. But urban slums located mostly in low lying environmentally hazardous area coupled with inadequate facilities like food, shelter, sanitation, health care make their life even worse. Older Women are the vulnerable groups in society in terms of climate change, movement; haphazard growth and unhealthy environment are the target group for this research. This study represents the nature and extent of elderly abuse of climate migrant urban poor women slum dwellers in Dhaka city in Bangladesh context. Besides, this paper also observe the socio-economic status of the study respondents and try to find out the self-stated reasons of elderly abuse. This study conducted both quantitative and qualitative types study on two slums of Dhaka with purposive sample survey, KII and in depth qualitative interview of selected climate migrant slum dwellers while purposive sample size of 50. Decreasing in earning capacity, inability and economic dependency, health hazard, maladjustment, changing social values have a separate role in the connection of older abuse. Planned migration, awareness program implantations against elderly abuse and secured socioeconomic factors are suggested through this paper to lessen exposure to further neglecting of elderly climate migrant women in urban slums.

Waldenström Macroglobulinemia (WM) is a B-cell lymphoproliferative disorder characterized mainly by uncontrolled accrual of M- immunoglobulin, secreted by malignant lymphoplasmatic cells. Mast cells interacting with malignant B-cells play an important role at the manifestation of the disease. Utilizing a previous xenotransplantation mouse model, this study evaluates long-term implant viability and quantifies distinct bone marrow mast cell populations along with their dynamics in non-WM and WM human bone implants. Non-WM bone implants were obtained from the femoral head of adult humans undergoing hip arthroplasty or hemiarthroplasty, whereas WM human bone implants originated from bone biopsies obtained from the posterior iliac crest of patients with active WM. All bone particles were implanted intramuscularly in twenty-four NOD/SCID mice. Following 3, 4 or 8 months postoperatively, xenografts were removed and studied using special histological techniques to identify mature and immature mast cells. Xenografts survived up to 8 months after implantation presenting normal cytoarchitecture (non-WM) or high-grade neoplastic infiltration and microresorption (WM bone biopsies). Statistical analysis of mast cell populations showed significant elevation regarding time progression and bone marrow microenvironment, thus suggesting the possible influence of malignant cells to the mast cell population in WM. This study presents the extended survival of intramuscular implantation of human adult bone xenografts into NOD/SCID mice and provides additional information on the interaction between mast cells and malignant B-cells.

Aim To study the chondroplasty efficacy of the bone matrix obtained using an original technology in restoring cartilage defect of the knee joint. Material and Methods Marginal defects were modeled on the surface of the distal end of the femur in 40 adult male Wistar rats. The bone matrix obtained using an original technology was implanted in the damaged area in animals of the experimental group. Material was investigated by means of light microscopy, transmission and scanning electron microscopy, and electron probe X-ray microanalysis. Results It was found that the bone matrix implanted did not cause an immune rejection reaction, activated reparative chondrogenesis for a prolonged period. In the area of articular cartilage lesion, the regenerate acquiring cellular and histochemical characteristics of the hyaline cartilage tissue was formed. The chondroinductive properties for the bone matrix were ensured by localized growth factors and morphogenetic proteins released during osteoclastic resorption. Conclusion The application of the bone matrix as a stimulator of chondrogenesis is theoretically reasonable and has a good perspective in treatment of damages and diseases of the articular cartilage.

Background The aim of this study is to evaluate the outcomes of patients submitted to diaphragmatic pacing, and the impact on quality of life of patients who chronically depend on mechanical ventilation, as well as the effectiveness of phrenic stimulation to eliminate the need for mechanical ventilation. Methods From 2010- 2014, 10 patients completely dependent on mechanical ventilation were operated upon, with the implantation of phrenic pacing device. The diagnoses were quadriplegia and congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS). All patients underwent bilateral approach to the phrenic nerves, by video-assisted thoracic surgery or mini-thoracotomy. Results All patientsstarted pacing 30-40 days post-operatively. The mean age of patients was 12.1 years (2-27 years range) with a median of ten years. Six patients (54.5%) were as old as ten years, and three (27.2%) were older than 20 years. Younger patients had CCHS and older ones were quadriplegic. All patients with CCHS (n = 4) were nine years old or younger while only two quadriplegic patients were in this age group. Conclusions Diaphragmatic pacing can provide improvement in the quality of life of patients who depend on mechanical ventilation, allowing freedom to conduct daily activities, lower respiratory infections, and tracheostomy decannulation.

Percutaneous device closure of atrial septal defects (ASD) has proven to be safe and it is nowadays the standard treatment for ASDs. Immediate or late device embolization is a rare but potential complication of every attempted ASD device closure. We report a case of asymptomatic Amplatzer Septal Occluder into the left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) detected by routine transthoracic echocardiography 3 months after successful implantation in a stable patient.

Patients suffering treatment resistant Parkinson´s disease (PD) are potential candidates for deep brain stimulation (DBS). Commonly most implanted electrodes have a cylindrical shape with quadripolar electrode contacts and generate a symmetrical stimulation field around the lead. To reduce side effects through activation of neighboring fibers a new electrode design with segmented contacts was developed and enables a better adaption of the field of stimulation as well as a multi-target stimulation to improve therapeutic benefits. We report about a 51-year-old male patient with a 15-year history of treatment-refractory PD, who was implanted with bilateral segmented electrodes in the subthalamic nucleus (STN) with St. Jude Medical Infinity™ DBS System (Abbott/St. Jude Medical, Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA). Despite a clear mood-enhancing effect, stimulation with ring electrodes caused motor side effects including rigor and speech disorder. With segmented electrodes an effective and gentle stimulation was achieved. The stimulation of the anterior segments in the central position of the electrode in the STN showed no side-effects and allowed a reduction of initial symptoms in an low stimulation amplitude. Despite precise preoperatively planning and intraoperative trial stimulation, side effects of STN stimulation are very common. The application of segmented electrodes permits more options to reduce side effects rather than using ring electrodes. Studies with larger sample sizes are needed to establish the optional DBS electrode.

Background: Chest wall deformities may be managed with skeletal manipulation, which risks life-threatening complications. Custom-made prostheses are a less invasive surgical option, manufactured from silicone elastomer using 3D computed tomographic reconstruction and 3D-printed thoracic models. Methods: All patients undergoing custom-made implants between January 2010 and March 2017 were identified from the prosthetic department records. A retrospective review of the clinical records was performed. Mean follow up period was 1.8 years. A comparison was made with our earlier results from 1995 to 2009. Results: Twenty-six patients underwent insertion of custom-made implants for chest wall deformity. Pectus excavatum was present in 50% (n=13), and Poland syndrome 42% (n=11). All 11 female patients underwent 3D reconstruction and 3D printed models, and 3 of 15 males. Four underwent simultaneous bilateral breast augmentation, and three had staged breast augmentation. Seroma occurred in 27% (n=7), and hypertrophic scar in 12% (n=3). The reoperation rate was 23% (n=6), including autologous fat graft in two patients. Surgical suction drains were used in 42% (n=11) patients, of whom 36% (n=4) developed seroma, compared with 17% (n=2) of those without drains (p=0.08). Conclusions: Custom-made prostheses are an effective and safe option for patients with chest wall deformities. The majority have a short postoperative inpatient stay (81%) and are satisfied with the outcome (77%). Seroma was the commonest complication (27%), and drains did not reduce seroma risk. Single dose intravenous antibiotic prophylaxis is adequate. A minority of patients opt for further aesthetic procedures.

Additive manufacturing (AM) is reshaping fabrication in engineering and clinical settings. This editorial highlights metal AM routes—SLS, SLM, DMLS, and EBM—and their application to patient-specific NiTi implants, where biocompatibility and shape-memory behavior are compelling. We note the current gaps that matter in practice: process parameter tuning, post-processing (heat treatment, coating, machining/finishing), and their effects on mechanical performance and corrosion. We invite contributions that quantify these trade-offs and expand AM beyond metals into polymers and ceramics, with clear comparisons across processes and materials. Our goal is to surface actionable findings that improve part quality, reliability, and clinical/industrial readiness.

Lung transplantation is an established treatment option for patients of end-stage lung diseases. Leading indications include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and bronchiectasis, pulmonary arterial hypertension. Living donor lung transplantation (LDLT) was indicated for patients who experience a decline in physical condition and have limited life expectancy and had the better result than from brain dead. The first case of LDLT in Vietnam is 7 year olds boy with difuse congenital bronchiectasis, chronic respiratory failure and cor pulmonale. The right and left lower lobes from father and relative uncle are implanted in a recipient in place of whole right and left lung. The initial result of this recipient showed that lung function recuperated quickly and had no early complications. After 12 months surgery, the recipient had normal physical exercise capacity, subclinical tests in normal limits and no respiratory symptoms, opportunistic infection.

Purpose of Study To study reparative osteogenesis and tissue integration characteristics for implanting three-dimensional mesh structures of titanium nickelide into a bone cavitary defect. Material and Methods The authors modeled cavitary defects of femoral metaphysis experimentally in Wistar rats divided into an experimental group and control one. The study duration was 60 days in total. The methods of radiography, those of light and electron microscopy, X-ray electron probe microanalysis used. Results Under implantation the defect was filled with cancellous bone the volumetric density of which more than 1,5-fold exceeded control values (р < 0.001). The implant had biocompatibility, osteoconductive and osteoinductive properties, it stopped inflammatory processes. The membrane protective barrier which prevented connective tissue sprouting was formed on the implant surface in the defect periosteal zone. The osteointegrative junction was formed being persisted up to the end of the experiment. Reparative osteogenesis was performed by direct intramembranous and apposition type. Conclusion The implant of three-dimensional mesh titaium-nickelide structures has marked osteoplastic properties, and it can be successfully used in orthopedic surgery.

Up till now, chitosan has confirmed its versatile application in skin, cartilage and bone tissue engineering, as well as in drug delivery applications. This study is focused on enzymatic degradation of porous chitosan structures usually designed for mentioned purposes. In vitro degradation was monitored during four weeks of incubation at physiological temperature and in two different media, phosphate buffer saline solution and water. The scaffolds were characterised before and after enzymatic degradation using scanning electron microscopy and infrared spectroscopy with Fourier transformations (FTIR). According to the gravimetric analysis, higher weight loss of chitosan scaffolds was observed in buffered medium with respect to the water. The results implied that the total weight loss obtained in buffer involves physical dissolution of chitosan and lysozyme cleavage of glycoside bond. Importantly, FTIR identification of chitosan scaffolds after enzymatic degradation indicated the absence of lysozyme activity in water, indicating that weight loss is a result of the chitosan dissolution. This finding greatly impacts design of degradation experiments and characterisation of degradation behaviour of chitosan-based materials utilised as implants or drug delivery systems.

The aims of this study are to investigate the variation in the mechanical behaviour of the primary cancer from cancer relapse, and measuring the therapeutic resistance acquired by cancer relapse. A431-cultured cells were irradiated for 7 months until 85 Gy. Then, a selected single cell was left to grow as stable A431-R cell line. 106 cells of A431 cells and 106 of A431-R cells suspended in 100 μL of medium were injected into subcutaneous tissues on the right thigh of athymic mice to generate tumor xenografts models of primary cancer (A431-P) and cancer relapse (A431-R). Radiotherapy of a low-dose of 30Gy was applied on xenoimplanted tumors after one week from inoculation. A mock process was performed on untreated groups of mice for controls. Tumor size was monitored starting from inoculation and tumor growth was measured along 42 days. Rates of mitosis and apoptosis and the histologic grade (HG) that characterize the tumor response were determined as described in earlier studies. Alterations induced on tumor HG in the treated models were 100% identical to the energy of the applied doses. The differences in response energy between cancer relapse and primary cancer irrespectively of the treatment (untreated vs. treated) or origin of the cells (A431-P vs. A431-R) in all phases of tumor responses (growth, shrinkage or regrowth) were 100% identical to the total differences in the administered regimens applied on those groups during those phases. Cancer relapse is characterized by a delay in growth before second line therapy for its relatively lower rate of mitosis compared by the primary cancer inducing a corresponding delay in the early detection. The therapeutic resistance of the cancer relapse is equivalent to the energy of the doses which have been delivered in the prior therapies, and requires increasing the administered dose by an amount equivalent to that resistance.

All independent experimental data on epithelial and glandular cells lines of human endometrium support the evidence for a rapid production of eicosanoids from the LH/hCG receptors when exposed to the hCG hormone. Prostaglandins rapidly act on the surrounding endometrial stromal cells throughout the adenylyl cyclase enzyme leading to very large amounts of cAMP and angiogenic factors (VEGF) production. The cAMP is the most important intracellular second messenger and along with progesterone accomplishes the full process of decidualization and acquisition of receptivity after estrogenic priming of the endometrium. The status of uterine receptivity lasts few days only and timing for successful embryo-signal transduction system activation by the endometrium is probably short. In absence of in vivo embryonic signals it is impossible to predict, on individual bases, how the intensity of all the complex interlinked molecular changes of decidualization might ever be in case of exposure to native hCG. In other terms, amount of prostaglandins and cAMP produced in response to variably glycosylated hCG are all, in vivo, not measurable variables and should be viewed as a “wave” of biochemical chain reactions. Embryonic hCG is secreted in form of multiple isomers having an unpredictable variable level of glycosylation and control of this variable remains elusive. During cycles of ovarian stimulation many drugs (FSH, LH, HCG) interact with different G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) making it possible to alter the prostaglandins-mediated decidualization process ready to be elicited only by hCG of pregnancy. Since the molecules (cAMP and progesterone) controlling endometrial stromal cells differentiation into decidual cells are critical for successful implantation and placenta formation, the evidence of fast eicosanoids production associated with endometrial LH/hCG receptors exposure to hCG and the potential by human endometrium to produce, in response, very large amounts of cAMP has biological and clinical relevance.

The objective of this study was to investigate whether percentage of mature oocytes retrieved from ovaries stimulated with long agonist or multi-dose antagonist protocols affect the implantation, clinical pregnancy and live birth of ICSI (Intracytoplasmic sperm injection) cycles. The 654 cycles of agonist (long lupron) and 610 cycles of multi-dose flexible antagonist (antagon) were analyzed after stratification according to the percentage of the mature oocytes retrieved. The clinical pregnancy of the groups with less than 30 % mature oocytes retrieved, both antagonist and agonist protocol was statistically lower (at least p< 0.05) compared to the groups with more than 30% mature oocytes retrieved. In the agonist protocol, the implantation and live births for this group were significantly (p<0.009) lower than in the group with ≥70% mature oocytes retrieved. The live births in groups with more mature oocytes retrieved (30-69% and ≥70 %) of the antagonist protocol were lower (22.2% vs. 35.9% and 23.9% vs. 41.5%, p<0.0001, respectively) compare to the agonist protocol. The results of our study showed that a very low percentage of mature oocytes retrieved impacts the clinical outcome of antagonist and long agonist protocols.

Background and Context: Autologous bone grafts require a second surgical exposure to harvest the graft with a significant risk of post-operative complications and donor site morbidity. Employment of allografts potentially eliminates donor site morbidity but carries the potential of causing foreign body immune reactions with a high rate of rejection and failures. Hence, Alloplasts have emerged as novel materials to overcome the drawbacks of autogenous and allogenous bone grafts. Today’s advanced dentistry is enterprising a putty form of calcium phosphosilicate (CPS) into several aspects of reconstructive domain of dentistry including the sinus augmentation procedures, osseous regeneration of periodontal bone defects, cystic cavity defects and alveolar socket preservation. This eccentric multifaceted study was planned as an honest effort on the path of proving the efficiency of CPS as an alloplastic bioactive graft material and aimed at quantitative evaluation of regenerated bone radiographically using Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) scans following sinus augmentation procedures. Materials and Methods: A total of 20 sinus augmentations were carried-out in 17 patients satisfying the criteria (inclusion and exclusion) requiring placement of implants in atrophic maxilla and in other situations of anatomic constraints. The graft material used was calcium phosphosilicate (CPS) putty (Nova bone dental putty, Novabone products, Alachua, Fla). The residual bone height was recorded using CBCT scans and a computer based software where the measurements were made from the crest of the ridge till the sinus floor lining. The patients were assessed clinically at immediate post-operative, 1 week, 1 month, 3 months and 6 months follow-up recalls post-operatively. Radiographic assessment for bone height was done pre-operatively and at 6 months follow-up recall post-operatively using Cone Beam Computer Tomography scans. Results: The post-treatment bone height (11.76+0.97mm) was found to be significantly higher than the pre-treatment bone height (6.8 +0.70mm) in indirect sinus augmentation procedures (t=14.4, p<0.005). In case of direct sinus augmentation group also, the post-treatment bone height (11.27 +0.71mm) came-out to be significantly higher than the pre-treatment bone height (2.44 +0.81mm) (t=32.17, p<0.005). The post-treatment bone grafted sinus floor measurements (1107.6 + 155.6mm) were also found to be significantly higher than the original sinus floor measurements of bone density (Grayscale values) (412+ 65.5mm) (t=16.6, p<0.001) in case of indirect sinus augmentation procedures. Similarly, the post-treatment bone grafted sinus floor measurements (1169.6+136.7mm) were found to be significantly higher than the original sinus floor measurements of bone density (Grayscale values) (416.4+ 0.70mm) (t=17.9, p<0.001) in case of direct sinus augmentation group. Conclusion: Calcium Phosphosilicate (CPS) was accepted well at the recipient sites without any complications demonstrating its efficiency and reliability in sinus augmentation procedures.

Context: The present study was undertaken to do a comparative evaluation of the role of Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) imaging and Orthopantomography (OPG) for pre-operative implant planning in combination with sinus grafting procedures in order to assess sinus anatomy and morphology and the existing bone height in three dimensions. Aims: To assess sinus anatomy and morphology and the existing bone height in three dimensions. Materials and Methods: Pre-operative assessment of maxillary sinuses for implant planning using CBCT imaging was performed on 20 sinuses (17 patients). These patients were subjected to orthopantomographs and CBCT imaging both pre-operatively and post-operatively. CBCT imaging helped to decide the type of sinus augmentation procedure best suited for the patients as per the individual needs and depending on the residual alveolar bone height, timing of implant placement, sinus morphology, anticipation of complication and comparative analysis between pre-and post-procedural gain in vertical alveolar bone height and increase in bone density. Statistical Analysis: The results were tabulated and statistically analyzed using Paired and Unpaired t-tests. Results: In the majority of cases, there was a concordance between the treatment type based on pre-operative and post-operative CBCT scans. The assessment of sinus morphology revealed a significantly higher detection rate of abberations in the form of sinus mucosal hypertrophy and septae on CBCT which were imperceptible on routine radiographs. The most appealing result was that vertical alveolar bone height could be measured precisely and there was a significant increase in surgical confidence and a significantly better prediction of complications when using CBCT imaging. Conclusions: A pre-operative planning based on CBCT imaging seems to improve sinus diagnostics and helps to execute a better treatment plan. Also, it is a good tool for the comparison of vertical alveolar bone height pre-and post-operatively following sinus augmentation procedures using various graft materials.

Purpose: The aim of the study was to analyze the spatial relationship between the sinus floor and the alveolar bone of maxillary premolars and molars in order to assess the amount of basal bone available for immediate extraction placement of endosseous implants. Materials and Methods: All the cone-beam computerized tomographic (CBCT) scans taken over a three-year period at four centers were identified. The subsinus bone height (SBH) was evaluated by measuring the distance between the sinus floor and the first and second premolar root apexes. The interradicular septum bone height (ISBH) of all the first and second molars was also measured, and the presence or absence of sinus-floor invagination between the molar roots was recorded. Results: Five hundred twenty-six (526) CBCT scans of fully or partially dentate maxillary arches were examined. The root apex was inside the sinus of 1.8% of all the first premolars. It approximated the sinus floor of 5.3% of them, and the distance between the two points was between 1 and 3mm of 20%, between 3 and 7mm for 34.1%, and more than 7mm for 34.1%. For the second premolars, the findings were 13.5% (inside the sinus), 10.5% (touching the sinus), 32.8% (1-3mm of distance) 28% (3-7 mm), and 15.2% (more than 7mm). Root invagination was noted in 50.2% of the first molars and 43.1% of the second molars, with the ISBHs ranging from 13.4% to 56.9%. Conclusion: Radiological evaluation is essential to determining whether implants should be placed immediately after extraction of maxillary premolars and molars.

Female fertility is an economically important trait in the dairy industry, and the fertility selection index has been developed as a method of including female fertility in the breeding goals of this industry. This index considers a combination of factors, including days open, number of inseminations per lactation, success after first insemination, and pregnancy within 70 d, 90 d, and 110 d after parity. Based on a genome-wide association study of the fertility selection index using 442 Holsteins, we found that the index is influenced by a variation in the thioredoxin fold region of the family with the sequence similarity 213, member A (FAM213A) protein. FAM213A is a CXXC motif-containing peroxiredoxin 2-like protein that regulates cellular redox status. A replacement of isoleucine with valine in FAM213A was associated with poor fertility in cows. The overexpression of FAM213AVal in bovine endometrial epithelial cells reduced reactive oxygen species to a lesser extent relative to the overexpression of FAM213AIle and caused a decrease in cyclooxygenase-2 expression. Downregulation of cyclooxygenase-2 led to a decline in prostaglandin E2, which is critical for implantation because it protects the conceptus from the maternal immune system. Cows with FAM213AVal showed lower levels of prostaglandin E2 than did cows with FAM213AIle, suggesting that cows with FAM213AVal are less fertile than cows with FAM213AIle because of their reduced uterine environment. Thus, the present study found that FAM213A unexpectedly modulates female fertility in cattle.

We present a case of subacute IST after stenting treatment of an isolated higher stenosis of the right middle cerebral artery (MCA). Analysis of clinical features and emergent brain image helped to indicate the pathophysiological mechanism underlining the symptoms of this patient. Emergent Transcranial Doppler (TCD) helped to evaluate the compensatory collateral circulation and provided good supporting evidence in deducing the mechanism of IST. Slightly larger size of the implanted stent that caused dissection or vascular endothelium injury was presumed in this patient. Persistent evidence of inflammatory factors might also contribute to IST in this patient.

Purpose: To describe a new intraocular lens that can be implanted in case of rupture of the posterior capsule and lack of capsular support. Methods: This experimental study was carried out on ten Flanders rabbits. The right eye of each rabbit underwent intra capsular lens extraction and two peripheral iridectomies, and the new lens was implanted with an optic rest in the posterior chamber. Additionally, the haptics rest in the angle of the anterior chamber through peripheral iridectomies. Main outcome measures were lens stability inside the eye and complications regarding this technique. Results: Intraocular lenses remained in a stable position with only a mild inflammatory reaction; four eyes developed hyphema that disappeared 10 days after surgery. Conclusion: The new lens design has good intraocular stability when posterior capsular support is absent and only produced minimal inflammation inside the eye.

Vocal fold scarring is a clinical problem without reliable treatment. Tissue engineering of a vocal fold replacement is an exciting potential treatment for vocal fold scars that involve multiple layers of the vocal fold. Human adipose-derived stem cells (ASC) were previously used to produce a promising vocal fold cover layer replacement. However, relevant in vivo studies are needed before human application, and implanting the human cells in animal larynges would introduce significant risk and data confounding. We therefore report here the development of a construct based on rabbit ASC with the potential for use in pre-clinical implantation studies. Rabbit ASC were isolated and cultured in a three-dimensional fibrin matrix to create an implantable construct resembling the vocal fold mucosa. Key differences between the human cell and the rabbit cell models are highlighted.

We report the case of a 22 year-old-male patient affected by Sotos syndrome was preoperatively and urgently evaluated for tracheal stent implantation due to respiratory insufficiency caused by idiopathic tracheal stenosis. Rest electrocardiogram detected a ventricular pre excitation; a transthoracic echocardiography showed a classic pattern fulfilling criteria for isolated left ventricular non compaction. At the best of our knowledge this is the first report of a patient suffering from Sotos syndrome and simultaneously affected by isolated left ventricular non compaction and ventricular pre excitation.
