Overview

Obesity is a chronic medical condition characterized by excessive accumulation of body fat to a degree that can harm health. It is commonly assessed using measures such as body mass index, along with indicators of body fat distribution, and it results from a complex interplay of dietary, physical-activity, genetic, metabolic, hormonal, behavioral, and environmental factors. Obesity raises the risk of numerous conditions, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, certain cancers, and reproductive and metabolic disorders, and it carries substantial individual and public-health consequences. Management spans lifestyle measures such as dietary change and increased physical activity, behavioral interventions, pharmacotherapy, and, in selected cases, devices or surgery. As a journal dedicated to Obesity Management, this title has published extensive peer-reviewed research on the topic, including studies of the physiology of adipose tissue, dietary and pharmacological interventions in animal models, the prevalence of obesity in specific populations, screening and management in clinical settings, intragastric balloon and other treatments for severe obesity, obesity in the context of mental illness, and the influence of thyroid hormones. These contributions reflect the journal's focus on the causes, consequences, prevention, and treatment of obesity. This page gathers open-access, peer-reviewed research relevant to obesity and its management.
